Changes follow retirement of long-time general counsel Robert Cleveland
Lydia Gavalis
Hamilton Lane has appointed a new top attorney and a new head of compliance. Â
As of April 1, Lydia Gavalis will be general counsel for the alternative investment management firm and Frederick Shaw will be chief compliance officer (CCO). Robert Cleveland, who has served as general counsel for more than 16 years, retires today, the firm says in a statement.
Gavalis has until now served as deputy general counsel and will assume responsibility for all legal affairs globally. She will report to CEO Mario Giannini. Shaw will report to Gavalis. Cleveland previously held both the CCO and general counsel positions, which have now been separated.
According to Hamilton Lane, the firm had more than $332 billion in total assets under management and supervision as of December 31, 2016.
‘Bob has been an invaluable part of Hamilton Lane’s success and evolution, and it is with deep appreciation and gratitude that we thank him for his service and wish him well in his retirement,’ Giannini says. ‘While we will miss having Bob as part of the Hamilton Lane team, we are confident we will continue to be well positioned to manage the legal and compliance functions under the sound guidance of Lydia and Fred.’
Gavalis previously worked at SEI for more than 18 years, including 10 years as general counsel of the firm’s institutional investors business segment. She was also general counsel for both SEI Private Trust Company and SEI Trust Company, head of SEI’s corporate services legal team and general counsel of London-based SEI Investments (Europe).
Shaw has served as director of compliance since joining Hamilton Lane in 2011. Before joining the firm, he was CCO of Natsource.Â
