Target hires new legal chief

Amy Tu was most recently chief administrative officer at Tyson Foods

Target Corporation has recruited Amy Tu as chief legal and compliance officer and corporate secretary, effective August 25. She succeeds Don Liu, who had announced his upcoming retirement and will move into a strategic advisory role.

Tu is joining Target having most recently been group president for international markets and chief administrative officer at Tyson Foods. She began work at Tyson in 2017 as executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary before becoming chief legal officer, secretary and head of global governance and corporate affairs.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Tu previously spent 16 years at Boeing in a variety of roles, most recently as chief counsel for anti-corruption and global law affairs. Before that she held the position of international counsel at Walmart and later Gap.

In her new role with Target, Tu will lead the company's legal, compliance and corporate governance functions. She will report to Brian Cornell, chair and CEO.

Liu will take on a strategic advisory role until May 2025. He joined Target in 2016 from Xerox Corporation where he had been executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary since 2007. Before his time at Xerox, Liu was senior vice president and chief compliance officer for Toll Brothers and senior vice president and general counsel for IKON Office Solutions. He was previously vice president and deputy chief legal officer at Aetna, having earlier worked in private practice.

Cornell says in a statement: ‘Amy's experience, both in legal and business leadership, offers strong continuity at the top of our legal affairs and compliance teams. Her stewardship will help our strong and tenured leaders in legal affairs sustain their role in serving our stakeholders and growing our business. Amy's growth mindset, her passion for the law and her skill as a business counselor make her a great addition as our leadership team drives Target's roadmap for growth and enterprise priorities.’

He adds: ‘Over the course of his distinguished career, Don has made an incredible impact on Target and the legal industry. As a member of our leadership team, he was an advocate for our company strategy, served as a mentor to teammates and peers and is regarded as a trailblazer for diversity, equity and inclusion within the legal profession. We're grateful for his many contributions and wish him nothing but the best.’
