Carey Roberts will join Assurant as executive vice president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary later this year.
Effective October 30, Roberts will be responsible for the insurance company’s global legal department, including compliance, government relations, internal audit and all other legal matters affecting the firm. As corporate secretary, Roberts will serve as liaison to the Assurant board of directors and advise on corporate governance matters.
Roberts succeeds Bart Schwartz, who earlier this year announced his intention to retire at year-end, according to the firm. ‘Throughout his long and successful tenure at Assurant, Bart has been an extraordinary counselor and guide as the company has outperformed and is well positioned for continued success in the future,’ president and CEO Alan Colberg says in a statement. ‘I join all of Assurant and the board of directors in thanking Bart for his numerous contributions and congratulating him on an outstanding career.’
Schwartz will remain with Assurant through year-end to help with the transition.
Roberts will join Assurant from Marsh & McLennan Companies, where she has served as deputy general counsel and corporate secretary since October 2014, adding the role of chief compliance officer in September 2015.
In a note to colleagues, Peter Beshar, executive vice president and general counsel with Marsh & McLennan Companies says: ‘Over the past three years, Carey has done an outstanding job for the company, juggling an array of tasks. She is a consummate professional and a compelling human being. Along with the [Marsh & McLennan Companies] board of directors and executive committee, I wish Carey the best of luck in her future endeavors.’
Before joining Marsh & McLennan, Roberts spent 17 years at law firm Covington & Burling, becoming a partner in 2005. During her time with the firm, she advised private and public companies on securities, finance, regulatory, employee compensation and benefits, intellectual property, technology and general corporate matters.
‘I look forward to joining Assurant’s high-performing leadership team and to working as part of a collaborative culture to help realize the company’s strategic vision,’ Roberts says in a statement.
