TeamHealth has appointed Philip McSween as the clinician services company’s executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary, effective July 31.
Before joining TeamHealth, McSween was a shareholder at Baker Donelson, where he had served since 2007 as chair of the Baker Ober Health Law Group. In private practice, he counseled non-profit and for-profit healthcare providers on a variety of regulatory and business issues, including joint ventures and M&A, according to a statement from his new firm. He also advised clients on the legal issues related to healthcare services, physician transactions, outpatient services transactions, management and analysis of compliance issues and outsourcing service lines.
According to a Baker Donelson statement, the firm has named Ashby Burks co-chair of Baker Ober Health Law, alongside Julie Kass. Richard Cowart, chair of the firm's health law/government relations and public policy department, says: ‘TeamHealth in one of Tennessee's and the nation's finest health care companies. It has had a presence in Knoxville for many years and is a long-standing client of the firm. Phil is one of our best and brightest health lawyers. We are sorry to lose him, but look forward to continuing and expanding our relationship with him and TeamHealth as he assumes his new responsibilities.’
TeamHealth offers outsourced emergency medicine, hospital medicine, critical care, anesthesiology, acute care surgery and obstetrics, among other services, through its roughly 20,000 affiliated physicians and advanced practice clinicians.
‘Phil is a thoughtful adviser who offers a deep understanding of healthcare law and decades of experience in physician-centric organizations,’ TeamHealth president and CEO Leif Murphy says in a statement. ‘I look forward to his steadfast guidance as TeamHealth continues to grow and expand its capabilities to support clinicians and clients in an evolving healthcare environment.’
TeamHealth promoted Jennifer Morrison to chief compliance officer in May this year. She had served since 2015 as the firm’s vice president of compliance. In that role, Morrison expanded and strengthened the company compliance program by developing the annual risk assessment and compliance work plan and implementing new investigation and auditing processes, according to the firm.
