David Shelton, senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary, has announced he plans to retire from The Chemours Company at the end of 2023, according to the firm.
As a part of the transition process, Shelton will from October 1 focus on managing the ‘resolution of the company’s legacy liabilities and related remediation programs’ and be a legal adviser to CEO Mark Newman, Chemours says in a statement.
Kristine Wellman, who is at present vice president for strategic planning, on October 1 will be promoted to become senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. In that role she will head up all non-legacy aspects of the legal function in addition to government affairs, ethics and compliance, corporate remediation and security.
Shelton took up his current position in November 2014. Before that he was associate general counsel for DuPont, from which Chemours was spun off in 2015. Shelton joined DuPont in 1996 and held numerous roles in its legal department, including environmental counsel and commercial counsel to DuPont Chemical Solutions Enterprise. Before joining DuPont, he worked in private practice in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey as a trial attorney.
Wellman was part of the company’s legal leadership team when it was spun off and has since developed its corporate governance framework. According to her LinkedIn profile, before joining the company Wellman was chief counsel at Capital One. She was previously general counsel at ING Direct USA and before that deputy general counsel at BB&T.
Newman says in a statement: ‘From the very beginning, Dave has demonstrated tremendous personal leadership and delivered significant results, including building a deep and diverse legal team. He has been a model of tenacity, courage and integrity to the entire organization. Without question, Dave has made a positive impact on this company that will be felt for years to come.’

I also have every confidence that she brings the level of talent and energy needed to continue developing a fit-for-purpose legal function that can accelerate our Chemours 2.0 transformation.’
