Dropbox has appointed William Yoon as the company’s new chief legal officer, effective March 28.
According to an SEC filing, Yoon was previously the company’s vice president for product counseling and privacy and he succeeds Bart Volkmer as CLO. The filing states that Volkmer earlier this month notified the company of his decision to resign, effective March 28, after which he will be available as an adviser to the company through April to ensure a smooth transition.
Yoon first joined Dropbox in 2013, when he founded the company’s product counseling team and has since taken on responsibilities including oversight of product counseling, privacy, commercial, litigation and regulatory matters. He had been the company’s chief privacy officer since 2020 before taking on his most recent role in 2021.
In addition to Dropbox, Yoon has held legal leadership roles in product counseling and privacy functions at Facebook and Google. He was an attorney at Foley & Lardner from 2006 to 2010.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Volkmer joined Dropbox as head of litigation and regulatory matters in 2011. He became general counsel in 2016 and CLO in 2020. He was previously an attorney with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
Volker says in a statement: ‘I’ve spent most of my career at Dropbox and it’s been a tremendous experience from start to finish. I’m proud of the incredible achievements we’ve made as a company and the role our teams on legal have been able to play in all of it. Thank you to [Dropbox CEO and chair Drew Houston] for the unwavering support and opportunity to be a part of this journey.’
Volker did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
Houston says in a statement: ‘Bart has been one of Dropbox’s biggest champions since the early days and I’m grateful for the guidance and leadership he’s brought to the company over the last 13 years. It’s hard to imagine Dropbox without him. I’m looking forward to working with Will as our new [CLO]. He’s a tenured product and privacy lawyer and I’m confident in his ability to lead our legal organization through our company’s next stage.’
