General counsel shuffle: Morgan Stanley promotes Grossman, NewsCorp nabs top GC, NFL out one legal chief

As for new general counsels, Morgan Stanley confirmed that Eric Grossman is being promoted to chief legal officer and will succeed Francis Barron.

The NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, an American football team, recently dropped the axe on its longtime general counsel Paul Vance, who also served as the team’s senior vice president of football operations.

Vance has been at the Florida-based operation since 2001 and was responsible for contract negotiations. According to news sources, the move to oust Vance came after a salary dispute that affected several fired assistants. The Washington Post reports that the team could reap up to $3 million in payments after a typo appeared in their contracts. Moreover, if the coaches of the team remain unemployed, they would expect to be compensated for the upcoming 2012 season.

As for new general counsels, Morgan Stanley confirmed that Eric Grossman is being promoted to chief legal officer and will succeed Francis Barron, who joined the financial services giant in July 2010. The New York Times says Grossman’s promotion marks a significant point in his legal career since he was asked to join the firm’s operating committee as well.

Grossman joined Morgan Stanley in 2006 and most recently served as global head of legal, managing the firm’s advisory law and litigation operations.

Next, embattled NewsCorp confirmed that it has named Gerson Zweifach as its new general counsel, after media speculation surfaced last week. Zweifach, a Washington DC litigator and partner at US law firm Williams & Connolly, will oversee all legal work at the billion-dollar conglomerate. He has tried antitrust, securities, libel and complex commercial cases.
