Match Group hires former Twitter general counsel as CLO

Company portfolio includes dating platforms Tinder, Hinge and OkCupid

Online dating company Match Group has hired Sean Edgett, a former Twitter (now X) general counsel, as its chief legal officer (CLO) and corporate secretary.

In his new role, Edgett leads the legal team and functions across the company’s portfolio of brands – which include Tinder, Hinge, Match, OkCupid and PlentyOfFish – and reports to Match Group’s CEO Bernard Kim.

Edgett was previously CLO and corporate secretary of UPSIDE Foods. Before his time with the private food technology company he spent more than a decade at Twitter, most recently as senior vice president and general counsel from February 2018 until October 2022. During his time at the social media firm he held executive legal roles overseeing its IPO, M&A, governance, employment and intellectual property matters. He also oversaw public policy, trust & safety and compliance in an acting executive capacity.

Edgett had earlier been director of legal at NetApp from October 2010 until August 2012, a role in which he tackled legal matters for M&A, strategic investments, corporate finance and public offerings.

Before moving in-house, he was a corporate attorney at Latham & Watkins and a litigator at Akin Gump.

Kim says in a statement: ‘Welcoming Sean to our leadership team is a crucial step for Match Group as we tackle the challenges of the rapidly changing technology landscape. [His] deep legal expertise, honed through his leadership roles at Twitter and UPSIDE Foods, where he oversaw critical functions including regulatory affairs, intellectual property, corporate governance and public policy, makes him an invaluable addition.

‘I am confident his strategic vision and commitment to excellence will not only strengthen our legal framework but also propel us forward as an industry leader in connecting people around the world.’
