Micron hires legal chief

Michael Ray was previously general counsel at Western Digital

Micron Technology has hired Michael Ray as the company’s senior vice president, chief legal officer (CLO) and corporate secretary.

Ray reports to Micron president and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. He is responsible for the company’s global legal, compliance and intellectual property (IP) functions.

Ray previously spent more than 23 years at Western Digital. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was most recently senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. His earlier positions at the company included vice president for legal services and vice president for corporate law.

Before joining Western Digital, he was corporate counsel at Wynn’s International, an NYSE-listed manufacturer of automotive parts and chemicals. He was previously a judicial clerk with the US District Court for the Central District of California and advised clients on labor and employment law at O’Melveny & Myers.

Rob Beard was general counsel and corporate secretary at Micron, heading up the semiconductor company’s global legal, IP and ethics and compliance functions, until joining Mastercard last summer as CLO, general counsel and head of global policy.

Beard had joined Micron in 2014 as the company’s primary M&A lawyer and for several years worked closely with the firm’s corporate development team on strategic opportunities including transactions in Japan, Taiwan, Europe, China and Singapore.

Mehrotra says in a statement: ‘[Ray’s] extensive expertise will be invaluable as we enhance our strategy and navigate business and market dynamics while operating with the highest levels of integrity. I am confident that under Michael’s leadership, Micron will remain at the forefront of industry compliance and governance as we drive the opportunity to meet the growing demand for memory and further strengthen our position.’
