BGE recruits internally for new general counsel

John Corse succeeds Dan Gahagan, who is retiring

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) has promoted John Corse to the post of vice president and general counsel.

Corse is succeeding Dan Gahagan, who announced his retirement in September. Corse most recently served as associate general counsel for BGE’s parent company Exelon, where he oversaw litigation activities for many of Exelon’s operating companies, including BGE, Pepco, Delmarva Power and Atlantic City Electric.

BGE is Maryland’s largest natural gas and electric utility with roughly 3,200 employees.

Corse and Gahagan have been working together on the transition over recent months, with Corse officially beginning his new role in January. He started his legal career in Baltimore, Maryland at Piper & Marbury, which later became Piper Rudnick. He was also an insurer with USF&G Corporation before joining Exelon in 2003 as chief litigation counsel for Constellation.

‘We are excited about the knowledge, experience and extensive community involvement John is bringing to the role of vice president and general counsel at BGE,’ says chief executive Calvin Butler in a statement. ‘We are also very thankful to Dan for his dedication and service, which includes expertly leading BGE’s legal strategy through some of the most transformational chapters in the company’s history, including the transition to competitive markets and smart meters, among many others.’
