Cigna appoints legal chief from in-house

Andrea Nelson gets promoted from chief counsel and deputy general counsel

Healthcare company The Cigna Group has promoted Andrea Nelson to become chief legal officer, giving her leadership of all legal functions.

Nelson was previously senior vice president, chief counsel and deputy general counsel for the group, and before that senior vice president and chief counsel of Cigna Healthcare, having joined the company in 2021, according to her LinkedIn profile. Before that, she spent more than five years at Express Scripts, most recently as vice president and chief counsel.

Previously, Nelson was general counsel, compliance officer and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act privacy officer with CastiaRx. Ahead of moving in-house, she was an attorney with Vorys Sater Seymour and Pease where she had a focus on healthcare regulatory matters.

In her new role, Nelson continues to report to Nicole Jones, executive vice president, chief administrative officer and general counsel for The Cigna Group. Jones continues to have executive oversight of the company’s legal and human resources functions – led by Nelson and Kari Stevens, respectively – in addition to government affairs, compliance & risk and communications & community programs.
