Fox News Media, which is owned by Fox Corporation, has hired Katherine Moran Meeks as general counsel, effective August 19. She will report to CEO Suzanne Scott.
Meeks is joining the company from Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, where she has been a partner in the law firm’s Washington, DC office practicing in the litigation department in addition to the appellate and constitutional law and labor & employment groups.
Meeks has represented journalists and media companies in libel and other speech-based tort cases. She has litigated appeals in state and federal courts involving constitutional and statutory questions, including under the First Amendment, the Twenty-first Amendment, the Copyright Act, the Federal Arbitration Act and the federal employment statutes.
Before joining Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, she was an associate at Williams & Connolly in the firm’s media and First Amendment practice group and earlier clerked for then-justice Anthony Kennedy of the US Supreme Court and then-chief judge Alex Kozinski of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Meeks began her career as a journalist, first as a reporter for The Day in New London, Connecticut before joining The Times-Picayune in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.
According to a Fox News Media statement, Bernard Gugar has stepped down from his position as general counsel and executive vice president of corporate development. In that statement, Gugar says: ‘My decision to step down was a difficult one, but I’m grateful to everyone at Fox News Media for an incredibly rewarding experience and wish the network nothing but continued success.’
Scott says in the announcement: ‘We are delighted to welcome Kate to Fox News Media and look forward to her tackling the legal intricacies of the ever-evolving media landscape. We thank Bernard for his incredibly hard work and extensive contributions over the last three years and wish him the best of luck in his next role.’
