In a new category just added this year, Royal Bank of Canada was honored for best corporate governance – international category.
Corporate Secretary, the leading governance and compliance publication, announced the winners of its Fourth Annual Corporate Governance Awards at a ceremony in New York Thursday night. Big winners this year included Visa and KLA-Tencor, which were named corporate governance team of the year in the large cap and small cap categories, with individual honors of corporate governance professional of the year going to Jay Martin of Baker Hughes and Brian Miller of AES Corporation. Stephen Norman, the former corporate secretary of American Express, received a special Lifetime Achievement award.
The event recognizes the leading practices and companies in the corporate compliance, governance and legal community. Winners were selected for demonstrating leadership in the corporate legal, governance and compliance field in an economic climate fraught with difficulty. An independent panel of governance experts served as judges.
‘Anyone who has seen the headlines over the past year knows that superior corporate governance means more than just following the rules,’ says Corporate Secretary editor Matthew Scott. ‘Companies that practice corporate governance well gain a clear competitive advantage in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Meanwhile, those that fall short are seeing clear market and regulatory consequences. Staying out of trouble isn’t enough anymore – a clear commitment to corporate governance is essential to future business success.’
